Pi Chaung confluence, Rakhine State, Myanmar — Airstrike location map

What happened

A Telegram channel linked to DVB, the Burmese exile broadcaster, reported on 22 October 2026 that the Myanmar military was targeting the Pi Chaung confluence in Rakhine State, a place described as a key point for goods moving into Rakhine. The Burmese-language post quotes a local resident who says the confluence is where three waterways meet and functions as a major landing point for traders who gather goods shipped from the central regions along the Lemro river route. The resident says the bombing caused damage and asks whether trade there has stopped entirely. The summary states that trade was reportedly nearly halted and that the local source cites damage. The post gives no casualty figures, no number of aircraft, and no precise time of the strike, and no independent account has been located yet.

Context and assessment

Rakhine is one of the most contested areas of Myanmar, where the junta has struggled to hold territory against the Arakan Army since late 2023. Control of river and road corridors matters because goods moving through them supply towns, markets and checkpoints on both sides of the front. The related events show a dense pattern in the same window. On 21 October, junta aircraft in a group reportedly conducted airstrikes near Kyaukphyu and the Oo Zin Taung hill area, placing air operations across several Rakhine locations within roughly a day. The same day, the Arakan Army reportedly fired an improvised 240mm rocket toward a Burmese Army base, showing that ground fighting and long-range fire were continuing alongside the air campaign. A separate report says more than 400 Rakhine returnees from Malaysia are still held by junta forces, which points to continuing control and movement restrictions. Operationally, a strike on a trade junction could be aimed at disrupting supply to Arakan Army-held areas, at pressuring local commerce that sustains opposition-linked communities, or at a military target near the market. The available data cannot distinguish among these explanations.

Sources and confidence

The report traces to a single Telegram channel, @dvbtvnews, which carries a Burmese-language post with a short headline and an interview excerpt from one local resident. No second outlet, monitoring group or imagery source is listed in the data. The confidence score of 6 out of 10 reflects a named, established outlet and a detailed local account, offset by single-source status, the absence of visual evidence and the lack of a stated strike time. Confidence would rise with corroboration from other Burmese media, local monitors, satellite imagery of the waterfront, or statements from either party. It would fall if the damage could not be verified or the strike were linked to a different site.

Location

The coordinates are approximate and given at region level with low location confidence, so the marker shows Rakhine State rather than a surveyed point at the confluence. The place name comes from the source post. Rakhine lies on Myanmar's western coast along the Bay of Bengal, bordering Bangladesh and India, with a mountainous interior and many rivers that drain toward the sea and serve as trade and travel routes.
